Indian Media has almost divided the opinion of Indian people on the issue of death penalty award to Mohd Afzal in the connection with attack on Parliament case, 2001. Some people are talking to reduce the death penalty through Presidential pardon to him. No body is talking about the crime he did against the nation.
Gaurav Sabnis says in his post The Afzal Issue as
Apart from murder, to the best of my knowledge, the Indian law gives death sentences for only two more crimes. One is dealing in drugs, though I do not know if anyone has been executed for that. The other is waging a war against the Indian state. I do believe he deserves to hang. Finally, we are seeing someone being punished for cold-blooded terrorism, and it being differentiated from just regular murder.

hi
The 2001 Indian Parliament attack which ended killing all the 5 terrorists [Pakistani nationals], 5 policemen [Indian] and injuring 18 others continues its effect till date. Now the last to be caught guilty in this case, Afzal - is sentenced to death by the Indian courts as the police proved his involvement in the attack. But, it is believed that the police had falsely made Afzal confess about the crime. His wife appealed to the President for pardon and insists that police had faultlessly humiliated and tortured her husband for their business. Thereafter violent protests were witnessed all across the nation either in support or to oppose.
But, I believe Afzal is innocent and so wanna appeal you to help him & his family. I very humbly request the officers/inspectors to look into the matter prudently to ensure that he faces a fair trial. Will you speak out at the injustice? Do you care for a Kashmiri who is losing faith in our Indian democracy? We can’t let an innocent man die! Remember, a prisoner can later be set free if found innocent, but can the rule bring back the innocent dead to life? This story is truly - ”A Fight for Justice”.
