For Godsake! Caste Identity is the last thing Bihar education needs

Caste based politics is the major culprit behind Bihar’s rotten state of affairs. Instead of dismantling the same it seems that the government is hell bent on deepening it further. And, this time they have chosen the state’s education system to carry it forward. A circular issued by Muzaffarpur’s district administration makes it mandatory for students appearing in annual exams in state-run primary and high schools to mention their caste in answer sheets otherwise their results would be withheld. Certain elements within the establishment seem to have forgotten that fair conduct of examination is meant to ascertain merit instead of consolidating caste based superiority. They also fail to remember that the move is tantamount to abetting caste based discrimination, which is illegal and punishable under the Indian constitution. With caste playing a major role in social, political, cultural, religious decision making education system alone assures Bihar’s downtrodden, yet talented youth to progress in life. Education has offered many a chance to shine as administrative officers, engineers, doctors and teachers. Bihar is a state desperately in need of leadership. Leadership that for godsake is willing to keep vicious caste based politics outside the classrooms.
